Well, I was bored and wanted to play my old D-Mod's, but I think my CD is somewhere in a box from the last time I moved. I figured I'd install the 1.06 freeware version (then I upgraded it to 1.07 Beta3) and suddenly Dink won't launch at all! It starts up, goes full screen (all black) -- sits for a couple seconds, then exits. If anything is happening, or if there are any "errors," they don't seem to appear. I emailed Seth -- will probably get an answer back, but I'm a little anxious to figure out the problem.Anybody else suddenly found themselves unable to run the Dink command line after an update? I'm installed to C:\DINK\ over my original copy....

I think this happened to me when I tried it under WXP/NT/2K with a non-administrator account. Dink wants to write dinksmallwood.ini in the Windows directory, and this made it crash - though Windows did not explained why.If this is the problem, then dink.exe should be launched with the -noini option... |

Hmmm... I'll try that, but I'm still using Windows '98 (and the CD version always worked). Hmmm. :( I'll try that though. |

-noini makes no difference. Still will not run. Is 1.07 beta 3 a bad version? :( :( :( |

-noini is not required for Win98 (all users are 'administrators' and can write in /Windows). What is strange is that I have v1.07 installed for a month under my Win98 in C:\games\dink, and all is working perfectly. Maybe something went wrong during the installation - some missing graphics/sounds making Dink crash?Mmm... yes, I can only suggest the good-old method: uninstall / clean / reinstall :

Mmm, I just got a crazy idea: did you well installed v1.07 over v1.06? Even if you did not, you should get a "Tiles missing" error message, anyway :/ |

I had 1.05 I think -- the CD version. Over this, I installed the full freeware version 1.06. Then, over this, I installed the 1.07 beta3 patch. |

Well, I cannot find anything to help you... So try a clean install, or maybe try to d/l again the v1.06 :

Well, instead of that, I installed Direct-X 8.1 and it started working again. |

Ah! I did not though of this. However, Dink needs DXv6, and I had it installed by default with my Win98. Maybe you have an earlier version of Win98 than mine. Glad to see that it eventually worked :) |

Well, I had DirectX 6 or 7 (7, I think) already -- I had it and the CD version of Dink (1.05 I believe) had been running just fine. It wasn't until I upgraded that it stopped working (after which the DX 8.1 install fixed it). Weird! |

In the whatsnew.txt file, there was this note (v1.06): "* Recompiled everything using Directx 7"Although it worked fine for me with DX 6... Well, I assume we will never know ;) |
